12 inch German K98 Cleaning Rods

1940 & Up - A

There are two primary variations of genuine 12" rods that I run across. First the earlier ones which have a slightly elongated threaded portion, and then the later ones with a shorter threaded section. Some early 12" rods were numberd with the last two digits of the rifle's number. Some also have waffenamts. Note the lack of a point at the end of the repro rod.

1940 & Up - B

Apparently there were two factories that started making the 12 inch rods in 1939. According to Law's book, the Sauer and Steyer factories started making 12 inch rods in 1939 while everyone else were still making 10 inch rods. When would they have stopped stamping the serial numbers? Also, when did the quote "early" characteristics such as the taper, elongated threaded portion etc, get phased out. 1939? 1940? Surely they could not have run these beyond 1941. Any additional insight would be appreciated.

On the earlier 12 inch examples I also frequently find there is another taper on the upper end as well. The older examples generally don't have this "ramp". Some early 12" rods were numberd with the last two digits of the rifle's number.

Notice the obvious box-like qualities of the reproduction. Demand good pictures before buying.

If you see a rod touted  as being Unissued, it means the rod is a reproduction!

Original 10" rods are almost always stamped with the last two digits of the serial number of the rifle with which they were issued. Also many 10" rods also have  waffenamts. Also note the tapered neck towards the cleaning rod hole.

It is rare to see 12" rods with these markings.

Boy that is a good looking finish on those guys. Seems a little out of  place though against that aged rifle.
